Whittlesea’s older residents and their carers can now access important wellbeing services more easily thanks to the completion of the Mernda Social Support Centre, backed by the Allan Labor Government.
Member for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage today joined community members and local representatives for a tour of the completed facility, made possible by more than $1.2 million from the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund.
With Mernda home to a booming and ageing population, the Social Support Centre will play a crucial role in supporting older residents to maintain their independence and stay connected to the community.
The Centre offers three social support services activity rooms, a quiet room, consulting room, kitchen, staff office, accessible toilets, and an outdoor courtyard with a quiet area.
Importantly, the new facilities are enabling the delivery of several programs designed to support the health and wellbeing of elderly residents.
These include exercises classes led by an accredited physiologist, a dementia and memory program delivered by allied health staff and group sessions to help people maintain mental wellbeing.
Access to these facilities and programs will ensure that elderly residents and people living with a disability, memory loss or limited mobility will have the chance to try new activities and forge important social connections.
Since 2015, the Growing Suburbs Fund has provided Whittlesea City Council with more than $42 million in funding towards 46 projects in its local area.
Through its 2023/24 Budget, the Victorian Labor Government is investing another $10 million in the Growing Suburbs Fund to support the delivery of critical local infrastructure in Melbourne’s fastest-growing communities. This funding is part of an $18.9 million investment to support suburbs across the city.
Lauren Kathage MP acknowledged Whittlesea City Council for its commitment to the project and financial contribution of more than $1.2 million.
