The extension from South Morang to Mernda delivered three new train stations and reintroduced passenger services on the line for the first time in almost 60 years following the last service in 1959.

Since opening, there have been more than 7.6 million trips taken on the new section of train line located 30 kilometers north-east of Melbourne’s CBD.

Three new stations were opened as part of the Mernda Line Extension project at Mernda, Hawkstowe and Middle Gorge stations with eight kilometers of new rail line delivered as part of the project.

As part of Victoria’s Big Build more than $20 billion is being invested in roads and rail infrastructure in Melbourne’s north east.

The Hurstbridge Line Duplication has allowed more train services to run on the Hurstbridge and Mernda line since April 2023.

We’ve also built six new stations on the Mernda Line - including the new Bell and Preston stations opened in 2022.

On the road network, the North East Link will save motorists up to 35 minutes by delivering the missing connection between the widened M80 Ring Road and an upgraded Eastern Freeway. Once complete, the Eastern Freeway upgrade will save motorists 11 minutes on the road.
