More Rights for Renters

31 March 2026

More protections for renters came into effect in March 2026, building on more than 150 renters’ reforms already introduced by this State Government.

We’re making renting fairer and more straightforward for tenants.

From March 2026, there’s a new standardised application form, with clear limits on what information can be asked.

We've also introduced a ban on charging extra fees through third-party apps just to apply or pay rent.

We’re also strengthening how rent increases are assessed — making sure they’re fair and reasonable.

These changes will make applying for a rental fairer, simpler and more affordable for renters across Victoria.

These new measures follow a suite of laws introduced in 2025, including:

  • Ensuring all rental properties meet minimum standards
  • Banning rental bidding and no‑fault evictions
  • Providing more notice for rent increases and notices to vacate

This State Government has renters' backs, with over 150 reforms already brought in to make renting fairer and more secure.
